Enlisted February 26, 1864, age 26, in the Union Army for service in the Civil War. David shaved 6 years off his age and said he was 20 years old. He was mustered into Company L, 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery Regiment for a three year term. This Regiment consisted of 12 Batteries with 2,400 soldiers. On August 23, 1865 David Ray was mustered out of the Union Army at Nashville, Tennessee. He went home to Thompson, Ohio.
