Enlisted July 26, 1862 at age 47(?) in the Union Army for service in the Civil War. Jackson lied about his age, claiming he was 43 to meet the conscription maximum age requirement of 45. Hew was mustered into Company B, 18th Iowa Regiment of Infantry as a Private. His Company was organized at Clinton, Iowa and was made up of 860 soldiers. On February 2, 1863 he received a disability discharge at Springfield, Missouri and went home to recuperate.

On September 8, 1863 Jackson Bridges, ate 48, re-enlisted in Company H, 9th Iowa Cavalry Regiment. Again he shaved his age to meet the conscription requirement and said he was 42 years old this time. He also signed for and took his son Edward Bridges with him into the same Regiment. Jackson Bridges died January 3, 1864 of disease at the Rock Island Prison Camp Hospital, Arsenal Island, St. Louis(?), Missouri (Illinois?). He was buried in the Union Rock Island National Cemetery.
